Tom Regan is a professor of religion & philosophy whom I heard speak on the importance of recapturing the "wisdom of our youth"
Looking back, I am amazed by how much of my present self was already there in my early years, and by how often I summon spirits of the past to guide me through the present

THE WISDOM OF MY YOUTH

© 1995 JIM HARRIS

THE ROAD IS LINED WITH MEMORIES
A THOUSAND STORIES TALL
I LABOR IN THEIR SHADOW
I CALL UPON THEM ALL
THEY SING TO ME IN HARMONY
OF OLD AND TIMELESS TRUTH
THE BEAUTY OF MY CHILDHOOD
THE WISDOM OF MY YOUTH

THE WORLD WAS FULL OF MUSIC
IT BROUGHT ME IN TO PLAY
I ONLY HAD TO LISTEN
I KNEW IT RIGHT AWAY
I NEEDED NO CONVINCING
NO FURTHER MEANS OF PROOF
I FOUND MY FUTURE CALLING
IN THE WISDOM OF MY YOUTH

THOSE PLACES WHERE MY HEART BEAT STRONG
THEY ALWAYS DID ME GOOD
I DIDN'T ASK TO BE THERE
BUT I WOULD

MY DOG WAS MY COMPANION
MY FAMILY AND MY FRIEND
AND EVERY TIME I LOST ONE
I THOUGHT MY WORLD WOULD END
WHEN DID I GROW SO GRACEFUL
AFRAID TO BE UNCOUTH
I FOUND MY FINEST HOUR
IN THE FLOWER OF MY YOUTH

SO MANY THINGS THAT CAUGHT MY EYE
THEY WEREN'T HARD TO FIND
WHAT SHOULD I KEEP
WHAT SHOULD I LEAVE BEHIND

THE TREES BECOME A FOREST
I HANG ON TO THE CHILD
THE JOURNEYMAN GUITARIST
THE LOVER OF THE WILD
TO MAKE IT IN THIS JUNGLE
TAKES MORE THAN NAIL AND TOOTH
IT TAKES A TASTE OF WISDOM
THE WISDOM OF MY YOUTH
